Looking back over the serpentine path that carried me from degrees in biology and anatomy, through nursing and on to counseling psychology followed by a second doctorate in clinical and depth psychology and finally psychoanalytic training, I know that nothing we do across our life-span is without value. Clearly I didn’t set out to become a psychoanalyst, but the universe took me there nevertheless. Even so, my training was highly eclectic, including extensive studies in Jungian analytic theory, Kohutian Self-Psychology, British Object Relations, as well as Interpersonal and Relational theories. Yet when I think about who my most important teachers have been, they have been my patients and my clinical supervisors.

Clinical Seminars
The Alliance Education committee is excited to introduce a new series of courses, asking seasoned clinicians to offer a seminar about their work over the years. This is a great opportunity to engage with the accumulated clinical learning of someone with considerable experience as a therapist. The seminar leader will discuss areas such as: what has shaped my work over the years, what I have struggled with, and what my work is like now. They will share case studies and clinical examples from their work to answer some of these questions and offer both highlights and challenges from their career. The seminar group may read together a couple of clinical articles that have been especially important to the leader. We hope these seminars can serve as one avenue for passing along the accumulated clinical wisdom in the field.
