More and more clients are bringing experiences of expanded states of consciousness into the consulting room through the use of psychedelics. How do we, as clinicians, help our clients hold, translate, and integrate these experiences? Is there shared terrain between the psychoanalytic endeavor and the psychedelic endeavor? If so, what is it—and can these approaches be blended? Grounded in such authors as Michael Pollan, Christopher Bache, Wilfred Bion and Stanislov Grof, we will explore these questions and more. Participants of this free study group will be encouraged to share their own personal and clinical experiences of expanded states of consciousness to further elucidate this topic.
Learning Objectives:
- Exploring and discussing what are expanded states of consciousness? How do we get there?
- Exploring and discussing what Freud and the early psychoanalytic thinkers thought about encounters with expanded states -- the religious or the luminous. What would they think about these encounters today now that psychedelics have been let out the closet? Would it change or expand their view of the tripartite psyche? The drives? The relational field?
- Exploring and discussing the ethical concerns in the consideration of psychedelics in psychoanalytic therapies? What’s legal? What’s not? What’s the future?
