What leads to psychic change and growth? In psychoanalytic treatment, it is more than the words used by analyst and patient. Dr. Bruce Reis has written extensively on non-interpretative mutative factors in treatment—his own work incorporating British Independent and French (non-Lacanian) psychoanalytic approaches to working analytically.
Drawing also on his interest in philosophy and his experience as a member of the Boston Change Process Study Group, Dr. Reis will discuss his conceptualization of “being-with” patients, a process and depth-oriented approach focused (following the work of Winnicott) on states of being. Consistent with what Ogden (2019) has recently termed an “ontological psychoanalysis”, Reis will emphasize an analytic approach that does not have to do with gaining understanding, representing the unrepresented, or symbolizing the unsymbolized.
Dr. Reis’s discussion will draw from two papers: “The Analyst’s Listening: For, To, With” (2021) and “Creative Repetition and Intersubjectivity” (2019) which will be used to illustrate the approach he takes in working non-interpretatively with analytic patients and with primal mental states. Discussion will include topics such as the uses of interpretation; what the word “communication” means in psychoanalysis; issues of technique as related to analytic goals and models of mind; and finally, the role of enactive processes in facilitating therapeutic change.
Participants will be encouraged to share clinical and theoretical perspectives and experiences in creating a group discussion on these themes. All participants will receive a copy of both papers upon registration.

Bruce Reis, Ph.D., FIPA, is a Training and Supervising Analyst and Faculty Member at the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research, New York; an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor in the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis; and a member of the Boston Change Process Study Group. Dr. Reis is Regional North American Editor for the International Journal of Psychoanalysis as well as its North American book review editor. He has previously served on the editorial boards of The Psychoanalytic Quarterly and Psychoanalytic Dialogues. He is the author of Creative Repetition and Intersubjectivity (Routledge, 2020) and co-editor (with Robert Grossmark) of Heterosexual Masculinities (Routledge, 2009).

Participants: This event is designed for graduate level students in mental health and all mental health professionals from introductory to advanced levels. The presentation is geared for clinicians who wish to advance their knowledge and expand their skill base in psychodynamic clinical work.
