Trauma and Unmentalized States - Ten session class with Judy K. Eekhoff, PhD, FIPA

Trauma according to Freud (1920) is defined by the failure of the internal contact barrier to protect the psyche from bombardment. Feeling bombarded is an internal response to either an internal or an external event arising when our necessary defensive organizations fail us. The internal response, one of overwhelm, shuts down the capacity to think, leaving an unmentalized state that is present but not memorable. Whereas we all have unmentalized states, trauma impacts ones ability to process and make meaning out of experience.

Postmodern Consciousness, Psychic Objectivity & the Eye of God, by Cece Briggs, PhD

A ubiquitous symbol of consciousness and psyche, the image of the eye has made its presence known throughout time in mythology, religious text, literature, and dream analysis. Carl Jung often wrote on the symbolism of the eye and noted its reoccurrence and relevance in the imagination of modern individuals. He argued that through its penetrating gaze, the autonomous Self is asking for nothing less than recognition and redemption.

Ritual and Symbolism of the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), by Jorge de la O, LMFT, Jungian Analyst, SRT

On Saturday the focus for the workshop will be on the Day of the Dead.

Participants are asked to bring photos and mementos as we will create an “ofrenda,” or altar to our departed love ones as they return to us during this one day of the year. Day of the Dead is a pre-Columbian tradition that has taken root in North American culture.

We will begin the day with a discussion of this sacred ritual with a focus on the work of printmaker and engraver Jose Guadalupe Posada and his profound impact on the art of Dia de los Muertos.
