Fundamentals of Psychoanalysis

Northwestern Psychoanalytic Society and Institute is pleased to announce open enrollment for the 2021-2022 Fundamentals of Psychoanalysis certificate course. We will be offering the second year of a two year curriculum; however, participation in Fundamentals I is not a pre-requisite for joining.  

In keeping with social distancing and in an effort to provide a safe learning experience, this year’s course will be held exclusively online, via Zoom.

The class is designed for mental health professionals who are interested in psychoanalytic theory and its application in psychotherapy practice:

Theoretical

In a nine-month program of weekly classes, we will study enduring concepts in psychoanalysis. By the completion of the course, participants will have a sense of how psychoanalytic thinking has evolved, from Freud to the current day. In keeping with NPSI’s theoretical orientation, the course, particularly in year two, emphasizes British Object Relations theory, including the work of Klein and Bion.

Clinical

Each monthly unit will culminate in a clinical case presentation, giving the group an opportunity to apply what they are learning to their clinical practice. Over the year, participants will become increasingly adept at psychoanalytic listening, thinking and intervening.

Fun

In this innovative design, each monthly unit will be taught by a different instructor, each of whom is an experienced psychoanalytically oriented clinician. Course participants stay together, while the faculty rotates monthly, which promotes the formation of a strong learning group.

The course also opens a door to meeting new colleagues and mentors in the field. By joining the NPSI community, participants are welcomed into the many and varied opportunities NPSI and Seattle’s psychoanalytic community have to offer for ongoing personal and professional growth. Participants can take just one year of the course, or take both years, culminating in a certificate of completion.

General Information:

Course Length: Weekly classes beginning October 2021 through June 2022 (9 months)

Time: Thursdays, 7:00 – 8:30 pm

 Location: This course will be held via Zoom video-conferencing.

Instructors: NPSI Psychoanalysts and Senior Candidates

At the completion of the course, participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance and 1.5 continuing education hours for each session attended. Perfect attendance = 51 CEUs.
