I will describe my work with a long-term patient whose religious faith underwent a number of significant changes across the years of our work together. I will try to show how her faith functioned in her internal world at the beginning of our work, how it developed across time and especially how she viewed her faith when we stopped.
The larger goal of the dialogue will be to open up a discussion around these issues. What have you experienced with your religious patients or your atheist patients? What role has your own religious faith or absence of faith played in your work? What do you do if someone asks you about your beliefs? If you are religious, how do you understand your work as a therapist in the context of your faith?
Pam Van Dalfsen, PhD will be the discussant.
