Psychoanalysis, AA, and Relapse Prevention: the Multimodal Treatment of a Fentanyl-Addicted Adolescent”

Presenter: Joel Martell PhD, PS

Dr. Martell will discuss some common elements of cognitive behavioral and psychoanalytic conceptualizations as applied in the psychoanalytic treatment of a poly-substance addicted adolescent male. He will briefly summarize components of Relapse Prevention and Motivational Enhancement therapy, as well as the Trans-theoretical model and elements of Alcoholics Anonymous in the context of a psychoanalytic treatment. 
 
Dr. Martell is a Seattle Psychologist and Psychoanalyst. He has trained in a variety of cognitive behavioral therapies as well as child and adult psychoanalysis. Prior to formal psychological training, he developed and directed a therapeutic high school serving adjudicated adolescents of Native Hawaiian descent.

Addiction is emerging as a major mental health issue in the 21st century. It is notoriously difficult to treat. In his discussion, Martin will present thoughts on the treatment of addiction in terms of analytic process and its therapeutic action as a way to facilitate the discussion of Joel's very interesting work with an addicted adolescent.

Martin Bullard is a graduate analyst of SPSI. He practices on upper Queen Anne in Seattle and works with children, adolescents and adults.
