An important question that has attracted significant attention in contemporary psychoanalysis is how the mind meets the world. What does this mean? How does it occur? What bridges the mind’s nascent existence to the world around? And how does one learn of the world? By extension, how does a patient meet a therapist and a therapist a new patient? Arguably the experiences that come under the name ‘superego’ have much to do with these questions. This short 5-week webinar course offers a collection of papers about these most complex and early experiences of meeting the world and reality, from the mother onward.

Given the complexity of the superego, clinically and conceptually, the papers are often challenging, at times unclear. Although we talk often about the superego and bump up against it even more often, it seems still compelling to keep making clarity for the sake of every session in the interplay of transference, countertransference, and projective identifications. The ultimate hope is that these conversations will stimulate further thinking to take into our practices.
