This online course will explore the evolution of the superego as an internal mental structure, its usefulness, its ever-presence in the mind of the patient, the mind of the therapist, and, therefore, our constant encounters with it in therapy. We will read authors such as Bion, Rosenfeld, Bronstein, O’Shaughnessy, and Brenman. As one of the central notions of analytic work, the superego has been and continues to be taught in COR’s foundational classes. Though not a pre-condition, it is beneficial that participants would have already studied the foundational papers offered in these previous classes.
