Center for Object Relations

What has been the experience of women who have contributed to the field of psychoanalysis? What institutional pressures and prejudice did they face? Who supported their ideas and ambitions, and what were their struggles both with men and with other women? How helpful were their analyses, whether with male or female analysts? How were their relationships with their husbands, companions and children affected by their deepening relationship with psychoanalysis?

This webinar aims to explore these questions, looking at the history, context, contributions and lives of the women psychoanalysts Melanie Klein, Paula Heimann, Marion Milner, Esther Bick, Karen Horney, Frieda Fromm-Reichman, Julia Kristeva, and Carla De Toffoli. The presenters, all women ourselves working in the psychoanalytic tradition, are interested in what we can learn from the experience of these prominent women.
