Freud thought that grieving was a process leading to detachment, which can be seen as a sort of closure. In complex trauma, one often cannot name or remember the exact details of an incident or a series of events, therefore grief stays frozen in psyche and soma. This case study will explore the work with a woman who experienced layers of complex trauma through psychic abandonment, both covert and overt. This case will narrate her therapeutic journey from negative space into form, shame, color, and substance.
