Scholarly Dialogues: Todd McGowan "The Death Drive in Love: Pride and Prejudice and the Obstacle"
This talk will focus on how we might understand the concept of the death drive as it evolves in Jacques Lacan’s thought and in relation to his conception of desire. It will subsequently interpret the Joe Wright film Pride and Prejudice (2005) in the light of this concept, arguing that death drive must play a crucial role in the development of love. Registrants are invited to view the film on their own prior to the event. Suggested readings will include excerpts from The Cambridge Introduction to Jacque Lacan, which will be emailed to participants prior to the event.

- Describe Lacan's conceptualization of the death drive and its evolution within his theoretical framework.
- Explain Lacan's theory of desire in relation to the death drive.
- Apply Lacanian concepts to the analysis of a film.
Speaker Bio:
Todd McGowan teaches theory and film at the University of Vermont. He is the author of Self-Sabotage, Pure Excess: Capitalism and the Commodity, Embracing Alienation, The Racist Fantasy, Emancipation After Hegel, Capitalism and Desire, Only a Joke Can Save Us, and other works. He is also the cohost of the Why Theory podcast with Ryan Engley.
