THIS CLASS IS FULL.

This short course will focus on the problem of narcissism, which is increasingly thought to underlie all types of psychopathology. We will discuss the psychoanalytic definition of narcissism as primarily a defense against intolerable damage to the self, damage which results in intense feelings of shame, inferiority, and worthlessness. We will draw our readings from authors such as Symington, Kohut, and Rosenfeld, but the goal of the class will be primarily clinical, helping students develop a deeper sense of their own struggles with this issue and thereby able to work with their own patients/clients more effectively.  Clinical vignettes will be offered by the instructors and students will be encouraged to open up their own clinical experiences.
