Drawing on mythology, psychoanalytic investigation and sociocultural trends this seminar will explore the ever-changing landscape of masculinity from classical images to current-day sociocultural perspectives on the male gender. We will examine the early roots of the masculine character, the skewed view of the masculine character in mental health research, and the present-day male taglines such as "patriarchy" and "toxic masculinity." Illustrations will be provided regarding the misunderstanding of men's needs and treatment by psychotherapists, the media, as well as by the social justice system. Suggestions of how to avert the terrible outcome of men from falling from the brink will be discussed. This seminar will draw heavily from Dr. Jachim's recent book, Men at the Brink: Masculinity in the 21st Century.
