NWAPS Distinguished Speakers Committee is pleased to invite you to join us for another dynamic and lively In Conversation event in which we invite an esteemed psychoanalyst to present new work and dialog with another scholar doing groundbreaking work in a field outside of psychoanalysis.
On March 14th we will be bringing New York psychoanalyst and professor Dr. Gila Ashtor into conversation with Seattle author and professor Dean Spade. Linked by their shared emphasis of the Laplanchian premise that humans are impacted by cultural scripts, Spade and Ashtor will investigate and wrestle with the dialectic between disrupting and constructing meaning, selfhood, sex, relationships, and trauma.
Ashtor will present a new academic paper on queer theory, gender and sexuality through the lens of Laplanche. Spade, presenting on the main themes of his most recent book, will emphasize praxis which is wildly helpful in terms of disrupting our dependency on intellect without consideration for the body and for relating out in the world.
We plan to ask Ashtor: What compelled you to become a Laplanche scholar as a contemporary psychoanalyst, and how does disrupting what we think we know about psychoanalytic theory serve us and our patients/clients. Plus, why now?
We plan to ask Spade: What kind of love, sex, and hell raising do you wish and recommend psychotherapists and psychoanalysts might risk? And how does such praxis aid our collective liberation?
What questions will you be stirred to ask? Please join us!
Learning Objectives
- Participants will be able to define “queer theory,” “relationality” and “enlarged sexuality” in context of the field of psychoanalysis.
- Participants will be able to recognize Laplanche’s innovative contributions to contemporary understanding and debate about sexuality and relationality.
- Participants will be able to describe how literature and critical theory challenges the bounds of psychoanalytic scholarship in order to further both theory and pragmatic political concerns for sexuality and gender freedom.
