You are Invited to The Northwest Alliance for Psychoanalytic Study’s 2020 Dorpat Lecture:

Climate Action from the Inside Out: Psychological Insights for a Heating Planet

How do we communicate about urgent crises without stimulating individual, social and political resistance, and defense mechanisms? 

In this lecture and discussion, we dismantle the most common misconception—that apathy indicates lack of concern—and highlight the integral role psychodynamic insights have in meeting these crises. 

Drawing on these insights, Dr. Lertzman will share the framework she has developed in working on the front lines of climate crises. She will review:

• The dominant approaches used for engaging people around ecological challenges;
• How we can leverage psychodynamic and psychoanalytic thinking to engage and mobilize people of diverse backgrounds and orientations.
• How to navigate apathy, denial, and other defense mechanisms.

Renee Lertzman, Ph.D. is an internationally recognized climate strategist, educator, and researcher, working closely with organizations to apply psychological insights for effective engagement for over two decades. Her work has been featured in the New York Times, The Washington Post, and many other publications. In 2019, she was awarded a grant from the KR Foundation, called Project InsideOut to support translating psychoanalytic insights into tools and resources for the climate and environmental sectors. Her book, Environmental Melancholia: Psychoanalytic Dimensions of Engagement was published by Routledge in 2015. You can learn more about her work at www.reneelertzman.com(link is external).
