The Silent Transference: Clinical Reflections on Ferenczi, Klein, and Bion - Judy K. Eekhoff, PhD, Presenter

This talk is based on the commonality of free association, attention to everything that goes through the mind without judgment, as understood both by psychoanalysts and by Buddhist meditators; the goal is to see what each tradition can learn from the other. It will include the proposition that psychotherapy and psychoanalysis can be viewed as a “two-person meditation.” (Kakar, 2015)

This program will begin with a brief historical overview of the development of field concepts in psychology and psychoanalysis.  The theory and technique of the three principal forms of psychoanalytic field theory will be described.  The three forms originate with the work of Madeleine and Willy Baranger in South America, the Bionian field theory of Antonino Ferro in Europe, and, the results of the work of Harry Stack Sullivan, Edgar Levenson and others on the development of interpersonal psychoanalysis in the United States.  Theoretical and clinical implications of the three

This program will examine modern psychoanalytic understanding and treatment of addiction. We will consider the nature of addiction, the relative importance of psychological and non-psychological (physical, genetic) factors, the relationship of addictions to compulsions, the statistical effectiveness and psychology of self-help groups, treatment of couples, distinguishing addiction from non-addiction abuse, the addiction inpatient rehabilitation industry, and commonly held myths about addiction.

Learning Objectives

We will consider race, class and culture from a psychoanalytic perspective, and why attention to these social categories is important in psychotherapy.  RELEVANT THEORY WILL BE PRESENTED, ALONG WITH CASE ILLUSTRATIONS FROM THE PRESENTER AND PARTICIPANTS.
