Foundations of British Object Relations 2024-25

Instructors: Sean Jackson MA, LMHC & Kerry Ragain PhD
Adam Schneider PhD & Allison Chow MA, LMHC
Katie Wilson MA, LMHC & Jeff Grant PhD

This course will span the academic year --18 sessions-- and will explore the context and development of the basic but complex object relations concepts arising from Freud and expanded upon by Klein and later theorists and clinicians. We will also consider necessary conditions for growing a mind, and the clinical implications when that process is affected by neglect or trauma.

"A Future Without Illusion: Analytic Resilience and Mutual Vulnerability in the Treatment of Genetic Disorders" presented by Maureen Murphy, PhD

Years ago on a panel entitled Clinical Gray Zones focusing on those times when abandonment of traditional neutrality was the better part of valor, Hedda Bolgar was asked how active she would be in the treatment of a seriously ill patient.  She replied: “All our clinical work is about protecting the future of our patients. When the future’s in doubt, what becomes the work of the analyst?”

Her answer reverberated for me when a patient in an established analysis was diagnosed with Huntington's disease.

“Religion in the Room: Relational Psychoanalytic Perspectives on Faith, Spirituality, and Religion in the Therapeutic Encounter” with Lisa Cataldo, MDiv, PhD

What are your religious or spiritual beliefs? Do your beliefs and traditions impact your work either implicitly or explicitly? And what about your clients’ beliefs? How do they show up in the room? Do you invite an exploration of how their spiritual or religious traditions might play out in their lives? And lastly, why are we trained to explore the subjects of sex and money but not religion?
