A Permanent Earthquake Revisited: Reflections on Psychotherapy with Children on the Autism Spectrum with Jeffrey Eaton, MA, FIPA

This event will be presented in two parts. 

In Part 1, Jeff Eaton will read his 2006 Frances Tustin Memorial Lecture titled “A Permanent Earthquake: Notes on the Treatment of a Young Boy.” This paper describes in detail the psychoanalytic treatment of a boy diagnosed with Autism by the University of Washington Autism Center. The essay gives a detailed feel for the therapeutic process while also exploring many of Frances Tustin’s seminal ideas. 

Core Competencies in Relational Psychoanalysis with Dr. Roy Barsness

Cultivating radical openness, courageous speech, and disciplined spontaneity in the psychodynamic relationship.

Pulling from the seven core competencies that evolved from his qualitative and quantitative research, this workshop with Dr. Roy Barsness will focus on: therapeutic outcome; therapeutic stance; deep listening/affective attunement; relational dynamics; patterning and linking; conflict; and courageous speech/disciplined spontaneity.

WBCPS Scientific Meeting: A Kristevan Birth in Analysis: Case Material Expounds the Deliverance of Psychic Freedom Through Maternal Eroticism

Maternal eroticism is explored as an etiological agent in the birth of psychic freedom. Pre-Oedipal functioning is revealed in an otherwise sophisticated patient, with pseudo maturity concretized in virginity. Themes of pregnancy, early infant care and breastfeeding repeatedly erupt in the analysis with a predominantly erotic transference-countertransference. Waves of abjection in the treatment, culminating in the analyst’s pregnancy, are emphasized in the development of independent thought and Oedipal operations.

SPSI Open House

For decades, SPSI (Seattle Psychoanalytic Society and Institute) has been holding Open House events in order to interest and inform possible applicants for training.

We have been fortunate in attracting many good people who have gone on to become psychoanalysts and members of our faculty. We encourage anyone interested in SPSI’s programs to come and see our facilities, as well as a presentation by current students of what the program entails and how they feel about it.
