We are pleased to present another co-sponsored event examining the intersection of race and psychotherapy on April 29, 2023 at 9am - 12pm (Seattle) / 12pm - 3pm (New York) / 5pm - 8pm (London). This online event will seek to build upon our initial co-sponsored Speaking About Race event that was held in January of 2021. Thinking Space was developed at the Tavistock Clinic in 2002 in order to promote thinking about racism and other forms of discrimination in the self and in the other. This Thinking Space session will be informed by the reading and the presentation. Previous attendance in Speaking About Race not required. Frank Lowe is a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist and formerly Head of Social Work in the Adolescent and Adult Directorate at the Tavistock Clinic. Before joining the Tavistock in 2001, he was a Social Services Inspector with the Department of Health and had been a manager of local authority mental health and children services. Frank has taught on several Tavistock courses, written several papers on race and psychotherapy and developed services at the Tavistock to improve access to psychotherapy for people from poor and marginalised communities. His work Thinking Space: Promoting Thinking About Race, Culture and Diversity in Psychotherapy and Beyond(Routledge, 2018) reflects on the collaborative work he and his colleagues created in London to form safe spaces for examining race, culture and diversity in psychotherapy.
During this event there will be a short breakout group portion of our time together. Groups will be created randomly during the event, and there will be a method for screening dual relationships. If you identify as a person of color and would like to be in a breakout group with only other people of color, please indicate this preference on the registration form by checking BIPOC affinity group. Further, if you would benefit from being in a group with closed captioning, please indicate this preference on the registration form as well. Groups can be set up with these specific wishes in mind.
