Working with Depression, with Terry Hanson, PhD

One of the most difficult challenges in our work is a patient with entrenched depression. Sometimes we encounter this as the presenting problem but often it emerges only gradually as the hidden background of the personality. Tolerating the impact of deep depression session after session can be one of the most taxing elements of our experience as therapists. In this seminar we will explore our shared experience with and understanding of the complexities of depression, helped by reading Freud's classic article, "Mourning and Melancholia," Klein's "A Contribution to the Psychogenesis of Manic-Depressive States," and the more contemporary book The Analyst's Experience of the Depressive Experience, by Steven Cooper.

Please contact instructor to enroll.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to discuss their own experience in their work with depressed patients.
  2. Participants will be able to compare Freud's and Klein's views on depression.
  3. Participants will be able to describe Cooper's ideas of the depressive position as an interpersonal experience.
