Please join the Child Therapy Committee of the NW Alliance for Psychoanalytic Study for First Fridays: a Mini-Series for Child Therapists. On the first Friday of February, March*, and April 2020, we are hosting different local speakers who each focus on integrating different psychoanalytic theories with psychotherapeutic work with children. The Alliance's Child Therapy Committee is dedicated to building community among child therapists in the Puget Sound area. We also work to bring therapists together to learn, grow, and develop skills. We hope you will join us for good food, learning, and community building.

Speaker: Chris Brubaker, MD, PhD
Topic: Understanding psychiatric medications for children and adolescents

So often it seems there is a divide between psychotherapy and psychotropic medications. These different approaches can be complimentary, and an understanding of what medications can be used for and what they do can help psychotherapists and their patients.

This presentation is on the topic of psychotropic medicines in a psychotherapy setting. The presenter will provide an overview of psychiatric medications for children and adults as well as, indications for use and reasons for caution. Helpful tips will be provided on when medicines might be needed, when therapy is more effective, and when to consult a psychiatrist. Clinical examples from the presenter’s practice as a psychiatrist who spends most of his time doing psychotherapy will illustrate the roles of psychotherapy and psychotropic medications, how they interact, and the meaning and impact of medications for children, families, and adults.

* due to scheduling issues the March workshop will be on the second Friday in March

This workshop will offer 2.0 credit hours provided by the National Association of Social Workers.

The building at 1450 114th Ave SE is called the Conifer Building and is connected to the Dilletante Cafe.
